1950 - KINDNESS
Messrs. M. T., Fred and Bede McPhillips, of the Great Northern Hotel West Kempsey, assisted by Mrs. Alma McPhillips, did everything that they could to make the refugees from the flood waters and others, numbering about 55 altogether, as comfortable as possible. Mrs. M. Jeffery had a very busy time preparing meals and stayed back after regular hours cooking meals for various people. Some of the lady guests helped in serving meals. Miss M Hindmarsh, of Macksville, sister of the late Dr. Hindmarsh, who come to Kempsey on Thursday to spend four days holiday, assisted in the dining room. Also assisting was Miss Nelly Doyle, head barmaid at the Century Hotel, Sydney, who came to Kempsey to have a holiday with her aunt, Mrs. Owen Richardson whose house had to be evacuated, the flood waters ultimately reaching to the ceiling.
The other hotels in West Kempsey were similarly placed and did all that was possible to assist people. There were about 60 people in "Allandale" Guest House, East Kempsey, and Miss E Mackay and staff had an exceptionally busy time.
