Big Blaze Averted - A GULGONG BLOCK. EARLY MORNING SCENE. A FORTUNATE DISCOVERY.
Shortly after 6 a.m. on Sunday morning Mr. Con Agapitos, of the White Cafe, noticed an outbreak of fire at the rear of the adjoining premises, occupied by Messrs. G. Mason and P. Barton as a hairdressing and billiard saloon.
He promptly called his two mates, Messrs. Jack Agapitos and George Kailes, and awakened the Gardiner family, whose business premises and residence adjoin Messrs, Mason and Barton's premises. Sergeant H. O. Moras and Constables Boon and Cook were early on the scene. Working like Trojans the three members of the White Cafe had the flames under control within a few minutes, but as the woodwork of the iron wall building was smouldering it took a quarter of an hour to minimise the danger entirely.
The discovery by Mr. Agapitos was most timely and fortunate, for had the building got well alight practically the whole block would have gone, and the main street would have presented a desolate scene later in the day. Eleven or twelve buildings could have been gutted.
How the fire started is not known, but it is surmised that it may have been the result of a lighted cigarette or a match. From all appearances, it started inside the building. There is nothing to indicate that it started from the fireplace.
Only one tank of water in the vicinity was available for the fire fighters.
The damage is estimated at approximately £30.
