The Gulgong Argus says About 8
pm on Wednesday, as Mr R Steer was passing the house of Mrs McDonald situated in the rear of Mr Stormer’s residence, he observed the glare
of fire from one of the windows and finding the house shut up, he broke one of
the windows just in time to rescue three little children who were undressed and
in bed, while the bedding and curtains were in ablaze. The young ones were fortunately uninjured,
although one of them was a little singed and blistered. The mother who was up the town heard of the
occurrence and rushing to her home fell down in a fit at the door. The neighbours rendered all assistance in
their power but it was some time before she could be brought to again. This ought to prove a warning to mothers not
to leave young children alone in a house and more especially so, if in this
case, a lighted candle is left in their close proximity.
