ABORIGINAL ART

 Acknowledgement

1923 - ABORIGINAL MYSTERY SIGNS.
MUDGEE, Tuesday.
In explanation of the hand prints recently found on the rocks near Ulan, a student of aboriginal customs states that when hands are found on rocks they indicate that a King has been buried nearby. The representation of eagles' heads, or the heads of animals denote that a battle was fought in the vicinity.
Eagles' heads are to be seen on a rock at Wollar, and arms and hands are numerous on a rock at White Munghorn. The arms and hands are white, and the rest of the rock is stained a crimson color. As the natural color of the rock is white, it is thought that human hands might have been placed on the rock and the rest of the rock stained with some durable substance known only to the blacks of the earlier generation, though this would not account for the markings of animals' heads.
A study of the imprints suggests that the aboriginals of Australia were possessed of a "lost art," and earlier generations were endowed with a higher intelligence than the race is given credit for.
