ADAMS   John

ADAMS  John Jnr.

April 6 1900

The Late Mr. J Adams, Jnr.--We have received the subjoined lines on the late Mr. John Adams:-‘He was a man among men. To the sick and weak he was always gentle and strong.  By his death I lose on of the very few friends I possessed  in this friendless world.  Fortune was fickle with him, despite his perseverance and practical knowledge of mining.  Perhaps after all he has, by his departure from this  world, discovered the Great Divide.  His life was a model of uprightness, generosity and kindness and I see sure that, He ‘who doth all thing best has marked out for him a golden claim in the smiling land beyond the Styian darkness.  A long farewell, old friend.’  T. R.

The Carr boys were at times left in sole charge of the faithful lubras. By the time he was 12, George was able to assist his father to put in 4 acres of wheat and to cut it, with the almost obsolete reaping hook seed was thrashed out by means of a flail. Each family had to grind its own flour and the brown bread thus produced formed their staple diet. Mobs of wild cattle roamed about and when the larder was low a raid was made on them. When a few new steeds were wanted the neighbour’s gathered round and yarded a mob of brumbies from which they took their pick. When the flour gave out young Carr and his brothers would go to Mudgee, Muswellbrook or even Maitland for it. Upon one occasion he saw the Hunter in flood and was held up for a week owing to the country being under water. He sometimes took down loads of wool and returned with food supplies. In due course Mr. Carr became a pit sawyer in company with Mr. Archer and made Miss Jane Archer his wife in 1875. He continued to work with Mr. Archer and he took up a selection at Murragamba Creek where he resided until his death. In 18--? he was operated on by Dr McCormack for hydatids. WOTTON   William J. E.

15/4/1937  [Died 1922]

An interesting review of association of the family of the late Mr. W. J. E. Wotton, police magistrate who died in Orange in his 85th year is published in the Young ‘Witness’ current issue, following a meeting of all 13 children at their mother’s residence at Cremorne last month. Mr. W. J E. Wotton who was born at Surry, fought in the Crimean War when aged only 16, and nine years later came to Australia, being appointed Crown Lands Agent and Clerk of Petty Sessions at Burrowa in 1862. Later he was police magistrate at Burrowa and Mudgee. Mrs. Donald Pilcher of Orange is a daughter and son Allen now retired manager of Union Bank branches at Orange, Temora and Maitland. Mr. Wotton married at Broughtonsworth, Burrowa on June 1, 1864 to Katherine Throsby Broughton, daughter of William Broughton, member of the exploration party comprising Hamilton Hume, Broughton and Baker. She was also a grand daughter of Commissioner General Broughton. Mrs. Wotton is now in her 92nd year and the aggregate ages of her children 780 years. She was born at the home where she married and is believed to be the oldest living native of Burrowa. Her mother Mrs. Mary Broughton lived to be 95 years.
