Harry Gudgeon, Salvation Army Drummer

Born on April 20, 1878, Harry Gudgeon has seen every general of The Salvation Army in person apart from General Edward Higgins. He was brought from Gulgong by his father to see General William Booth during the Founder's second visit to Australia.
He remembers the Army's beginnings in Gulgong in 1885. As a boy, he received his first instrument from his father, a euphonium costing £4.10. Retired Bandmaster Gudgeon still attends two indoor meetings on Sundays, plays the drum, and attends open-air meetings.
