1926 - THE LATE MR. FARTHING
The late Mr. W. Farthing, who passed away recently, was an old and respected resident of Gulgong. He followed the occupation of a miner, and made many friends. The deceased has left a wife and grown-up family to mourn their loss. The arrangements for the funeral were carried out by Mr. S. Turner. A memorial service in memory of the late Mr. Farthing was held in the Presbyterian Church, Gulgong, on the Sunday evening before last. The sermon was preached by the Rev. A. G. Palmer. The preacher bore testimony to the industrious spirit and sturdy optimism of a spirit that embodied the best of the pioneer traditions. Carlyle's Gospel of Work, he stated, had found a practicable disciple and stressed the application of this essential truth to the needs of Australia to-day. The sympathy of the congregation was conveyed to the widow and members of the family. Miss Fyfe played "The Dead March" impressively, and the service closed in a spirit of hope and confidence in the future.
