Herbert Hurn was born on the 23rd June 1876 at Gulgong, NSW. His parents were Richard and Rebecca Eliza Hurn. They lived at Breeza and later at Caroll until he was thirteen years old. At that age he moved with his uncle, Gus Anderson, to southern Queensland after his parents had died.
