ROBINSON

Eliza Robinson nee Cockelin

Eliza Francis was the daughter of Patrick Cockelin (a tailor) and Mary Ann Hanley (a convict). She was born in Sydney around 1836. Patrick Cocklen arrived on the Prince Regent in 1830. He was transported for 7 years from the Middlesex Jail.

Eliza was married to James Robinson on 5 January 1876 at the Wesleyan Methodist Parsonage, Gulgong, in the presence of Phoebe Stear and Frances Albury and officiated by Benjamin Meek.

Eliza and James had 13 children. They included:
  • EDWARD - born ca 1854
  • DANIEL - born ca 1858
  • ELIZA - born ca 1862
  • CHARLES - born ca 1865
  • HENRY - born ca 1867
  • THOMAS - born ca 1871
  • MARIA JANE - born ca 1874 died 1947 (buried Gulgong, Anglican, C5)
  • ALBERT - born ca 1879
Eliza also gave birth to 2 males and 4 females (deceased). One of these was:
  • EMMA - born 1869 at Goodiman, died 3.4.1870 at Goodiman aged 12 months and 24 days. Cause of death "teething" (3 mths duration). Buried 7 April at Cobbora Cemetery.

Eliza Robinson died aged 57 on 13 October 1893 at Goolma. The cause of death was consumption (she had suffered for 12 months). She was last attended to by Dr Nickoll on 16 February 1893. Her son-in-law, George Turvey, was the notifier of her death. Eliza was buried in Gulong on 15 October 1893 (Roman Catholic). 

James Charles Robinson of Goolma died aged 70 on 17 February 1894. He was listed as a storekeeper at death but in 1869 he was described as a shepherd. The cause of death was "dropsy" which he had suffered for 4 months.
James Charles Robinson was born in England in 1824 to Captain Daniel Robinson and Emma White. James came to Australia in 1840 and his death record says he married Eliza "Cochrane" in Bathurst when he was 32, so about 1856 (the name and year are different to her record).

James was buried at Gulgong Cemetery on 18.2.1894 (Church of England)
