CROWLEY

Michael Crowley was born on 21 March 1830 in Lancashire. He arrived in Australia in February 1835 with his father Patrick who was a soldier and his mother Mary. 

Michael married Sarah Bradmore on 9 July 1855 at Westbury, Tasmania. Sarah was the daughter of a convict. They had 8 children with the last 4 being born in Gulgong:
  • Henry - born 1873
  • Louis Michael - born 1875
  • Letitia C - born 1878
  • Albert Edward - born 1880
Michael Crowley died at Gundagai in 1884. 

Michael and Sarah's eldest daughter, Ellen Crowley, married George Hutchinson at Gulgong in 1880. George was the son of William Hutchinson and Catherine MacKenzie. William Hutchinson arrived in what was then known as the Mudgee district in 1842 and died at Gulgong in 1880.

NEWS ITEMS

Michael Crowley wrote a number of letters to newspapers in the 1870s about the administration of mining regulations and the "frontage system" or "nuisance" as he called it, that continued on the Gulgong goldfield long after it had been gotten rid of elsewhere.
