HUNN

Jacob Hunn 1833–1918

Jacob was born on 14 June 1833 at Acle, Norfolk, England. He died in Austalia at Beechworth, Victoria on 23 May 1918.

Jacob worked as a sawyer/miner. He was a bit of a scoundrel as he left children and a wife in Norfolk then fronted up in Gulgong with a new wife, Mary nee Stapleton (having married at Lambing Flat in about 1873).

Jacob Hunn was the owner/occupier of a house and sawpit on Hospital Road in 1877/78.

Mary had one son, named Arthur Jacob, born in Gulgong in 1874. Jacob was not listed on the birth certificate. He later absconded to live in Victoria with his two sisters and their husbands, who were two brothers with the surname Ward (also from Acle, Norfolk England). Jacob, later known as a "Respectable Gentleman," died in Beechworth Asylum.

Mary Stapleton 1833–1902

Mary was born on 19 December 1833 in Ireland (possibly at Killoskehan, Killoskehan Parish, County Tipperary). She came to Australia in about 1847.

According to Mary's death certificate (NSW BDM 9443/1902) she first married Tobias Butler in Bathurst and had one male child (deceased).

At the age of 40 she married Jacob Hunn at Lambing Flat. They had one son, Arthur.

Mary Hunn occupied a home in Medley Street in 1887/88. At the age of 70, Mary died of "heart failure, senile debility and congestion of lungs" on 25 August 1902 at Gulgong and was buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Gulgong Cemetery

Arthur died on 18 July 1917 at Cobar.

MR. ARTHUR HUNN.
The death occurred at the Cobar District hospital on Wednesday morning of a well-known resident in the person of Mr Arthur Hunn. Deceased was a native of Gulgong, where he was employed by Mr C. R. Young, and came to Cobar about twelve years ago, being employed for the greater portion of that time at the State Stores. He was only in his forty-third year, and leaves a widow and nine children — four boys and five girls — for whom much sympathy is expressed in their sad bereavement. The funeral took place at 10.30 on Thursday morning, the remains being interred in the Catholic portion of the cemetery. Dean Hughes officiated at the graveside. Many wreaths were received, including one from the State Stores Limited and Mr P. Snelson. Mr T. Owen carried out the funeral arrangements.

Annie died in 1946 and is buried at Rookwood (M2 15, 645)
