WILLIAM LETT SNR

WILLIAM LETT Snr

William Lett was born on the Nepean on 25 February 1829.

William’s parents were William Lett (1781-1835) and Elizabeth Hyde (1798-1838), married in Parramatta on the 29 October 1827. Elizabeth Hyde was William Lett’s second wife. His siblings were Elizabeth (1830-1894) and Thomas (1834-1838).

William's father, William Lett, a convict transported to New South Wales in 1802, died in Sydney in August 1835. William’s mother, Elizabeth Hyde, remarried George Hall in December of the same year. Elizabeth Hall died in 1838, with her three children perhaps taken to the Parramatta Orphan School (Thomas Lett died in the orphan school in 1838).

William Lett married Elizabeth Healey at St. Bernards Church, Hartley, on 11 June 1860. Witnesses were John Connor and Ann Healey, Eliza’s mother.

The 14 children of William and Elizabeth were:

  • Patrick James (1861-1945)
  • William (1862-1945)
  • Elizabeth (1963-1927)

1908 - Death of a Pioneer

The death occurred at Cudgebegong on Wednesday 28 ultimo of Mr. W. Lett sen., one of the oldest inhabitants of that district having resided there upwards of 30 years. There was no man better known and none better respected than 'good old William Lett' as he was familiarly called. A friend to many who had "tasted the bitterness of life" and his death has removed a genial personality who will long be remembered. He leaves a wife, eight sons and four daughters, all whom have the sympathy of their departed parent's friends.
