COMMERCIAL HOTEL

Commercial Hotel, Herbert Street, next to John Emerson the Bootmaker. Edwin Davies, licensee. Davies had a sawpit near the hotel and imported the first Dubbo pine to Gulgong. Davies was followed by George Bathurst Young as licensee in the latter part of 1975 [sic, 1875], and in February the following year the hotel closed. The licence was transferred to the Post Office Hotel of John Scully.

NEWS ITEMS

MONDAY, DECEMBER 11.
Before the police-magistrate. John Fox alias Byrne alias McAleer, on remand, charged with forging and uttering a cheque for £24 7s. 11d. was again brought up.
Edward Davis, re-called, deposed: When prisoner came to the Commercial Hotel with the cheque I asked him if the person who signed the cheque was the George Rouse on whose land near Gulgong the gold was found; he said " that's the very man."
Remanded till Monday next, bail allowed.
