NEWS ITEMS
On Saturday night last, after thc cook of William Sam, who keeps n Chinese boarding-house, had retired to rest, a celestial brother took tho opportunity of removing a sheet of bark close to his bed, and afterwards removing from under his pillow a pair of trowsers, the pockets of which contained £7 17s 6d. The thief soon cut the pockets out of the pants, and hurried away with his booty; but had not departed long before the "curry lice" man awoke, missed his money, and gave information to the police. District constables Merrick and Flaherty were soon on the track of the thief, and in less than half-an-hour captured him, finding in his possession the exact amount stolen, for which he could not account. At Home Rule there are only two police stationed—Merrick and Flaherty—who for their vigilance on all occasions are deserving every praise; with a population like ours it appears a mystery to many how they are enabled to perform the many duties with so much satisfaction.
