1874 - The Shades
At Mr. F. Francke’s, Great Western Hotel, a parlour has been dug out of the hard rock under the bar for the accommodation of visitors. The work has been very heavy for the rock had to be cut out with gads and picks, for neither powder nor dynamite could be used. The room is approached by a flight of broad steps leading to the street and is neatly fitted up, the walls covered with Indian matting and supplied with a pipe near the ceiling to serve as a ventilator. There is an injenior[sic] contrivance for lowering refreshments from the bar, by a box balanced with a weight, avoiding the necessity of going round by the street and down the staircase. It’s evident from the work that the proprietor does not think that Gulgong is going down, otherwise he would not have gone down with his expensive work and satisfactorily finished it in the solid rock—the hardest of all the rock in the vicinity of Gulgong and the most obnoxious to the miner.
