1922 - Death of Mr H. Gudgeon.
The death took place on Friday last of Mr. Henry Gudgeon, Gulgong's oldest inhabitant, at the age of 96 years. Until last year the late Mr. Gudgeon had enjoyed splendid health considering his advanced age and it was only a few days before his death that he contracted bronchitis which ended fatally.
The old gentleman was born in Cambridgeshire England in 1826, and 28 years later he came to Australia. Soon after his arrival in Australia he settled down at McDonald's Creek, near Mudgee where he lived for a quarter of a century and reared a large family, only five of whom are living. After 25 years at McDonald's Creek he came to Gulgong where he spent the remainder of his days, and his residence here extended over 29 years. The deceased gentleman had had a varied experience during his long life. Although it is over 85 years since the coronation of Queen Victoria, the late Mr. Gudgeon had a distinct recollection of it right to the time of his death. The deceased travelled over the mountains, in the bushranging days, and during his early life in Australia he had experiences never heard of now.
The living members of the family are: Mrs. Bain (Quaker's Hill), Mrs. Searle (Cooranbong, Newcastle), Thomas (Quaker's Hill). and Wade (Gulgong). The funeral took place on Saturday last, the remains being interred in the Methodist portion of the general cemetery. The Rev. C. J. Watts officiated at the graveside. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. McGowan and Bayliss. The "Advertiser" extends deepest sympathy to the bereaved family. — Gulgong "Advertiser."
