Samuel Bassett

Samuel Bassett, born 1811, was from Timsbury near Bath, England. Aroudn 1834 he arrived in Australia as a convict (for stealing a pig to feed his family). He was then aged about 23. He later worked as a shepherd.
He married Mary Doolan (an Aboriginal woman who also worked at Biraganbil) in the Mudgee district, probably in the 1840s. He later married Mary Silk.Samuel's children included:

Samuel Bassett died 2 July 1894 at Home Rule of "senile debility heart failure" of 8 years duration. (BDM 6112/1894). The informant regartding his death was H S Woods of Combandry (his grandson). He was buried by C of E minister Rev F Haviland at Biraganbil on 3 July 1894 next to his daughter Anne who died aged 14.
