LAMONT

William Lamont, a miner, was born around 1835 in Argylshire, Scotland. His father, Charles Lamont, was a farmer. William arrived in Australia around 1865.

Catherine Kennedy was born in 1845 in Perthshire, Scotland to Hugh Kennedy, a tailor and Margaret Kennedy nee Robertson. She travelled to Australia around 1855.

Catherine first married Peter Milne in Maryborough, Victoria (VIC BDM 4281/1870).

Their children were: 

  • Alex K - born c. 1871
  • Mary A - born c. 1875

Catherine Milne nee Kennedy married William Lamont in Home Rule in 1877 (NSW BDM 3637/1877 listed as "Lamout").

Catherine and William Lamont's children were:

  • William - born 1878 (NSW BDM 17026/1878)
  • Margaret - born 1880 (NSW BDM 19040/1880)

William died from heart disease on 4 October 1895 at the age of 60. Catherine, a housekeeper, died aged 58 on 17 May 1903. The cause of death was carcinoma of 3 years duration.

1895 - Results of Prize Competitions.
Professor Wideawake has grown thin with the work of the last week. He has been sitting for days surrounded by mountains of papers, working steadily through to find the precious one. More than 100 new contributors have joined the Corner during the last month, and the old ones' names are very few of them conspicuous by absence. The Professor is glad to find so much interest taken in the competitions, for the prizes necessarily are limited in number, and therefore all but four of the workers have to be content with the reward that work accomplished gives.
