Magazine Hill, looking South

Magazine Hill derived its name form the Gunpowder and Kersosene Magazine that was built there in 1874 to safely store dangerous materials used by miners and others. The town, largely timber in construction, was considered at risk of total destruction if such materials, stored within the town's buildings, met with an accident causing explosions and fire.
