CICOGNANI

Frederick Liszo Fortuna Cicognani married Isabella Aspinall in Gulgong in 1875 (NSW BDM 3270/1875)
Frederick was born in London, the son of Mariano Cicognani, a cloth merchant, and Caroline Butters. He arrived in Australia around 1869 (calculated from "20 yrs in colony" as stated on death record).

Frederick, named "LINO CICOGNANI" on Birth Certificate - was otherwise known as "Frederick Lino Fortunato Butters Cicognani", "Frederick", "Frederick Liszo Fertunato". He arrived in Australia approx. 1864, possibly a gold-seeker, hence going to Gulgong. His most common occupation is listed as Miner. However in 1877 he claimed it to be a photographer. His daughter Emily Frances (Bowen) was known to say that he was "an English gentleman of private means". He "adopted" Minnie Mary Aspinall as his child on his marrying her mother, Isabella.

1944 - Old Gulgong Residents Left for New Home
Last week Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cicognani, for many years residents of the old Criterion Hotel building at the corner of Belmore and Herbert Streets, and to whom, the "Advertiser" referred in a paragraph in a recent issue, left for Wollongong during last week accompanied by their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Stehr, with whom they intend living.
Mr. and Mrs. Cicognani will be missed by many folk around, and their many little kindnesses to those folk especially in their neighborhood, will always be remembered and cherished by them. "Joe" was a well-known identity, and it will not seem quite the same to many now that he will not be seen about with horse and cart.
The "Advertiser" joins with their many friends in wishing both Mr. and Mrs. Cicognani many more years of happy memories in their new home at Wollongong, where, no doubt, they will find many old Gulgong district folks to talk with about the old town.
