KURRAJONG COTTAGE

 169 MAYNE STREET

The first record of an owner of Section 25 Lot 1 appears in the Municipality of Gulgong Rate Books of 1896-1899, the owner occupier Martin McGowan—House—Shop and Land. Martin McGowan died in 1913 and is buried in the Gulgong Cemetery.

Rate Books 1900—1906—Occupier is J McGowan—House and Land—the rates paid by William McGowan. The name Agnes McGowan appears on a town map as owner of the back part of the block.

McGowan’s and Bayliss were Undertakers in Mayne Street in 1919.

1940 Donald Campbell Lee occupied the building and his occupation was an electrician.

A Mrs. Lyons also owned the building

Mid 1940s the owners were Les and Maud Honeysett who live there with their two daughters. Les died in 1960 and Maud continued to live in the home until her death in 1968. Their daughter Lesley Ellery [formerly Bayliss] and sons lived there for a time.

In the mid-1980s Steve Brown, Town Planner with the Mudgee Shire Council, purchased the home and made extensive renovations. His mother converted the ‘long’ room into the ‘Kurrajong Tea Rooms’ and that is how it became the Kurrajong Cottage.
