We notice that the contractors, Smith and party, are busy clearing the streets of those dangerous nuisances, stumps. Many visitors to our places of worship, and more especially those of the Church of England, will be thankful for this; for on dark evenings these obstructions could scarcely be avoided. But while one obstacle is being removed, another seems to spring up; the puddlers at the bottom of Queen Street for the purpose of running the water to their dam, have thrown some twenty or thirty loads of tailings across Herbert Street in a great heap, which is likely to cause many an accident. If they must run their water from the main street, why not cut a culvert and cover it in. On Sunday Mr. Myers had a narrow escape crossing the embankment.

1872 - ACCIDENT
Sunday last while Mr. Myers was driving down Herbert Street in a spring-cart an awkward accident, that might have ended seriously, occurred. Across Herbert Street at the intersection of Little Queen Street, an embankment of tailings has been make by a party of puddlers to intercept the rainfall flowing down Herbert Street, and turn it along Little Queen Street.
This novel dam when crossed by many vehicle driven faster than walking pace jerks the shafts upwards and the onward action of the horse cause them to come down again with a sudden jerk, severely trying the strength of the harness, especially the back band.
Mr. Myers back-band did not stand the test and it broke, letting the shafts down around the horses legs. The horse commenced kicking violently, tipping the cart upwards, and sending the company in it, out backwards, in an ungraceful manner. Luckily no one was hurt. There have been several accidents of this
nature.
