1870 - [ORDERLY]
The population numbers about 900, and are very orderly indeed. Offences of any kind are rare, a pleasing result attributable in a great measure to the zeal and vigilance of Sergeant O'Donnell who in his own quiet way is a 'terror to evil doers.'

7th December, 1870.Sergeant O'Donnell respectfully reports, for the information of the superintendent, that within the last week a payable lead of gold has been, opened about a quarter of a mile due north of the township. Shares in claims have been sold for L50 immediately after gold was struck, and since, then as much as L200 has, it is said, been refused for share. The lead opens into an extensive flat, and there is confidence expreased in it that it will be continuous for miles. There is great excitement created by this discovery amongst the miners, and the population numerically increasing at a large rate. There is no crime of any importance, and the population so far very orderly.(Signed), JOHN O'DONNELL, Sergeant.C. J. P. Lydiard, Esq., Superintendent of Police,Western District, Bathurst.
