1928 - FATAL SPILL

Car at Mount Druitt - FAMILY'S MISFORTUNE
The Western Road, Mt. Druitt, has been the scene of many motor mishaps within recent months, and another has been added to the list by a fatal accident that happened last Sunday afternoon.
About 3 p.m. the near side back tyre of a car driven by, Madeline Madsen (24), of Francis Street, Marrickville, in a westerly direction, blew out when the car was nearly two miles on the eastern
side of St. Marys. The brakes were applied, and the car skidded and turned over on the right-hand side of the road, and faced in the direction opposite to that in which it had been traveling! The occupants were thrown on to the roadway.
The party comprised Martin Madsen, of Francis Street, Marrickville, members of his family, and others. He suffered a fractured collarbone and skull, and died before the Parramatta-Auburn Ambulance could get him to Parramatta Hospital, whence all the injured were taken.
Constable Myers and Dr. Day went out to the scene of the accident. The other members of the party were:—
Emily Madsen, 56, shock.
Doreen Madsen, 24, fractured collar bone and shock.
Kevin Madsen, 21, concussion, shock, and lacerated wound on top of head.
Madeline Madsen, 20 (the driver), shock.
Mavis Richardson, 9, lacerated right knee.
They were treated at the hospital, and afterwards left for home.

Young Madeleine

Madeleine and Doreen Madsen (sisters) married Charles and Eugene O'Brien (brothers).

Back row: Madeleine, Nellie, John, Grace, Wilfred, Doreen, Charles
Seated: Unknown man, Emily Madsen, John Michael O'Brien, Julie O'Brien
On grass: Barbara, Colleen and Kathleen O'Brien.

At the age of 24 Madeleine had been behind the wheel when the family went for a drive in 1928. A tyre blow out caused a crash in which Martin Madsen, her father, died.

Madeleine had sat in the ambulance with his head cradled in her lap. Years later she suffered depression and underwent shock treatment for the condition (in the 1960s). She also felt incredible anxiety and guilt about abandoning Mr Peel (her fiance). Instead she married Charles O'Brien.

While residing in Loretto nursing home, she received some unofficial counselling from Sister Phillipa and it made a huge difference to Madeleine (for example, she took fewer drugs thereafter) and felt more at peace.

EARLY LIFE

Doreen O'Brien nee Madsen

Doreen married Eugene O'Brien in 1931 in Marrickville.

1931 - [Wedding]
O ' Brien — Madsen.
A pretty wedding was celebrated at St. Brigid's Church, Marrickville, on Saturday, 18th inst., when Doreen, eldest daughter of Mrs. E. Madsen and the late Martin Madsen, was married to Eugene, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. O'Brien, of Marrickville.
Rev. Father Gerard, C.P., solemnised the marriage. Entering the church on the arm of her brother, Mr. Kevin Madsen, the young bride looked striking in her beautiful gown of white chenille and plain georgette.
The beautiful Honiton lace veil, lent by Mrs. J. P. Minogue, of Marrickville, was lined with tulle, the headdress being a coronet of orange blossoms. The bridesmaids were the Misses Madeleine and Ella Madsen (sisters of the bride) and Miss Kathleen O'Brien (sister of the bridegroom), all three choosing frocks of delphinium blue georgette, cut on long Grecian lines, and wore large blue tulle picture hats. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. John O'Brien as best man, and Messrs. Wilfred O'Brien and Harry Child as groomsmen. The "Wedding March" was played by Miss Veronica Acton, who later during the signing of the register, accompanied Mr. Alfred Peel's rendition of Luzzi's 'Ave Maria.' The reception was held at the Cavalier, King street, where the bride's mother, assisted by the mother of the bridegroom, received the guests. On leaving by the Orara for Coolangatta, where the honeymoon will be spent, the bride chose a black and white pencil stripe ensemble, with velour hat to tone, the toilette being completed with a beautiful set of stonemartens, the gift of the bridegroom. The crowded church, together with the numerous congratulatory messages and costly gifts received, amply testified the esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Eugene O'Brien are held. The future home of the happy couple will be at Marrickville.

Doreen and Eugene's children were Barbara and Colleen O'Brien (picture below).
