TURNER

Alfred Edward Turner was born in 1881 in Gulgong to William and Margaret Turner.

Alfred married Lilla May Rope in April 1905 in the Manse of the Presbyterian Church at Mudgee. They had seven children between 1905 and 1914 (five boys and two girls). They were:
  • Alfred E J (1905),
  • Irene E (1906),
  • Lillian M (1908),
  • Roy W (1909)
  • John K (1911)
  • Gordon I (1913)
  • George E (1914).
In 1907 the Mudgee Guardian reported that Alfred Turner had been granted a coach licence but in the 1911 Government Gazertte listings of "porterage allowances' (see below) Alfred is listed as delivering mail by horse and sulky. In electoral rolls of 1913 he was listed as a coach driver. On the birth certificate of his son, Gordon, in 1913 his occupation is shown as a "coach proprietor".

1907 - Gulgong Licensing Court
At the Gulgong Licensing Court last week, four coach licenses were granted to W. J. Gawthorne, and one coach license to Alfred Turner; a second hand dealer's license was granted to Henry J. Farthing, of Gulgong. Renewal's of publican's licenses were granted to C. Lincoln, Post Office Hotel (Gulgong); F. L. Egan, Prince of Wales Hotel (Gulgong); T. H. Wood, hotel (Yamble). A wine license was granted to F. Docwra, Tallewang road.

GULGONG POLICE COURT.
At the Gulgong Police Court on Tuesday, May 17, before A. E. Bridgen and A. C. Garling, J.'sP., Alfred Turner was charged with unlawfully assaulting James Turner on the 16 instant. Accused pleaded not guilty, but, after hearing evidence, the Bench found the charge proved and imposed a fine of £2, or in default two months in Bathurst gaol. The fine was paid.

In 1913 he bought an acre of land next to Brigdens' allotment at Gulgong.

1913 - LAND SOLD.
At the Mudgee Lands Office yesterday three allotments of land were offered for sale. Two, within the village of Wollar, fronting Barnet street, Price-street, and Wollar Creek drew no offer. But an area of 1 acre at Gulgong. adjoining Mr. A. Brigden's allotment 2, was sold to. Alfred Turner, coach proprietor, Gulgong, at the upset price of £16/17-. Improvements to the value of £3/7 / were remitted.

Alfred's father died in 1913. His mother, Margaret Carroll, born about 1836 in Ireland, died 11 June 1914 at Gulgong.

1913 - DEATH OF A PIONEER.
A link with the golden days of Gulgong was torn asunder on Monday night by the death of Mr. William Turner, one of the best-known identities of the district, and a pioneer who was highly respected by all sections of the community. The sad event occurred at the deceased's residence, Park View. He was 84 years of age. Coming to Australia from England when 20 years of age.
He found his way to Bathurst, where he started a dairy farm. He was prosperous from start to finish. In those days the gold fever was raging in many parts of the State, and the deceased was one of those who were eventually lured by the glowing accounts of the richness of the Gulgong field. He carried in the district over 40 years ago, and although he did not strike any rich claims, he made a comfortable living. Since going to Gulgong he has hardly ever left the district. Deceased was married twice. He leaves a widow and the following children to mourn: — Messrs. John, Charles, Frederick (Sydney), William, Albert, and Alfred Turner (Gulgong), and Mrs. C. Craft (Dunedoo).
The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) the remains being interred in the Church of England cemetery, Gulgong. To the bereaved ones we extend our deepest sympathy.

Foundation Day celebrations in Gulgong, in April 1993, included a re-enactment of bushrangers holding up the Cobb & Co Coach. Wendy Borchert and her daughter were passengers in the coach. The bushrangers and troopers in uniform (carrying shotguns), were an historical re-enactment group who came from near Newcastle.
