In electoral rolls of 1913 he was listed as a coach driver. On the birth certificate of his son, Gordon, in 1913 his occupation is shown as a "coach proprietor".

Alfred's father died in 1913. His mother, Margaret Carroll, born about 1836 in Ireland, died 11 June 1914 at Gulgong.

1913 - DEATH OF A PIONEER.
A link with the golden days of Gulgong was torn asunder on Monday night by the death of Mr. William Turner, one of the best-known identities of the district, and a pioneer who was highly respected by all sections of the community. The sad event occurred at the deceased's residence, Park View. He was 84 years of age. Coming to Australia from England when 20 years of age.
He found his way to Bathurst, where he started a dairy farm. He was prosperous from start to finish. In those days the gold fever was raging in many parts of the State, and the deceased was one of those who were eventually lured by the glowing accounts of the richness of the Gulgong field. He carried in the district over 40 years ago, and although he did not strike any rich claims, he made a comfortable living. Since going to Gulgong he has hardly ever left the district. Deceased was married twice. He leaves a widow and the following children to mourn: — Messrs. John, Charles, Frederick (Sydney), William, Albert, and Alfred Turner (Gulgong), and Mrs. C. Craft (Dunedoo).
The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) the remains being interred in the Church of England cemetery, Gulgong. To the bereaved ones we extend our deepest sympathy.
