Philip and Bridget Caffrey were early pioneers in the Goolma area. Their sons John Joseph, Matthias and Michael also owned land there. Philip died 19 December 1873 and is buried in Gulgong cemetery. His wife, Bridget predeceased him on 3 February 1869 and is buried in the cemetery at Uamby Philip and Bridget had 5 surviving children, having lost 1 son, and 4 daughters.

Philip and Bridget Caffrey arrived in 1840 on the ‘Isabella’. He was a Bounty immigrant, sponsored by John Marshall who was paid £18 per head for each arrival. Philip’s calling was stated as a Shepherd but by 1844 he was employed as a Teacher at Greendale, Penrith, before moving to the Gulgong district and farming at Goolma.

1874 - FATAL ACCIDENT.
A man by the name of Phillip Caffrey, a farmer on the Dubbo road at Lambing Hill, was thrown from his horse on Thursday last, and being brought into Gulgong died from the injuries at Naughton's hotel on the same evening. Drs. Ewington and Bennett were both in attendance. An Inquest was held by T. A. Browne, Esq,, District Coroner, and a verdict of death from concussion of the brain, according to evidence of the medical gentlemen, was recorded.
