1928 - [GATHERING THE NAMES]
The committee appointed to complete the Soldiers' Memorial in Anzac Park, Gulgong, requires names of all soldiers who served in the war, and who have come to reside in the Gulgong-Wyaldra districts since repatriation. It is intended to add these names to the tablets to be erected on the beautiful memorial rotunda in Anzac Park. The work, which will be in bronze, with letters in polished brass faces, has been entrusted to Messrs Wunderlich, and Messrs Chubbs Australia, Ltd., is making the memorial gates. Will soldiers in the area mentioned send along their names to Mr Arthur Croft, "Bellambi", Gulgong, at once.

NEWS ITEMS
Various notes about the soldiers appeared in the Gulgong Advertiser as the war continued. These snippets give some idea of the service given by the local men often entailing three years’ service in Europe. Many were wounded and then returned to give additional service. 

This list has been collated by Barbara Hickson based on available/surviving newspapers. The brackets indicate the date of the Gulgong Advertiser, month and year.

ALLAN. W. Son of Mrs. T Allan of Gulgong recently returned from France, where he was wounded on several occasions which necessitated his discharge from the forces as unfit for further military service. (7/18)

BAX. Jack Private. Killed in action. Awarded the Military Medal for two actions including voluntarily leading a party out into a shell crater and being gassed. (8/18)

DARNELL. A.T. Private. Admitted to hospital in England on September 23 with gunshot wounds to his back. One of four brothers at the front. (10/18)

DEVEIGNE. Henry George. Private. Has been released from Germany and now in England. (9/18). Son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Deveigne of Goolma, returned home after long service with the AIF; he was wounded and taken prisoner and placed in a German Concentration Camp, until the armistice. (7/19)

ELLERY. T Private. Home on furlough, but soon to return to the front in France (8/18)

FARROW. G. Private. Son of Mr and Mrs G Farrow, Tallawang, will receive his discharge in the course of a few days. (7.18)

NAUGHTON. Ray. Lieutenant Ray Naughton returned to Gulgong last week, was wounded in France last year. (8/18). Appointed to duty on No 2 District Guard Sydney. (10/18)

O’CONNOR. Jack. Warrant-Officer. Son of Mr. Martin O’Connor of Mayne Street returned home after 3 years’ service attached to the 9th Battalion Australian Field artillery, 3rd Division. Served at the battle of Villers Bretonneux. (6/19)

RUSTEN. Jack Private. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W Rusten of Tallawang, died of Concussion at the front. The fallen soldier was one of four brother who enlisted. (7/18)

RYAN. Snowy. (Edward). Son of Mr. and Mrs. T Ryan of Herbert Street. Killed in action. Enlisted in 1916 when the ‘Kookaburras’ passed through the district. Serving with the 33rd Battalion at the time. (8/18)

RYAN. Francis Stanislaus. Killed in action in France while serving with the AIF. His mother is Mrs. C M Ryan of Goolma. (9/18). A former councillor of the Wyaldra Shire Council.

WILDMAN. Jas, (James) Private. Son of James Wildman. Severely wounded and gassed in France. Enlisted in Gulgong. (6/18). Later at Salisbury Plain camp, discharged from hospital as cured of the effects of gas poisoning in France. (8/18). Arrived in Melbourne (4/19)

WILLIAMS. Les. Signaler. Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Williams of Home Rule, returned home from active service. He enlisted with the ‘Kookaburras and served nearly three years in France. (7/19)
