LAUT

HENRY CHARLES 'CHARLES' LAUT (also known as 'Lant') was born about Feb 1837 in Nassau, Germany. He arrived in Australia in about 1853. He died on 14 June 1911 in Gulgong (NSW BMD 5886/1911) .
Charles married GRACE HARKIN, daughter of JOHN HARKIN and MARGARET, on 30 November 1867 in Mudgee (NSW BMD: 2507/1867) - Rites of the Church of Rome. 

Grace was born on 24 April 1848* in Donegal, Ireland - general servant - arrived 1864 Montmorency. She died on 21 Sep 1918 in BMD: 10043/1918 - Villa St - Portland - NSW Australia.

HENRY CHARLES 'Charles' LAUT arrived in about 1853 (he spent 56 years in the Colony) (no records can be found of Shipping to date on 12 Jan 1855). He was buried on 15 June 1911 in Gulgong Cemetery - C/E Section.

  • Charles Laut was born in 1835 in Nassau - Germany, to parents Peter Laut (1814 Germany-1879 Carcoar NSW Australia) and Mother "Unknown".
  • Charle's correct name was - Henry Charles - but most records show that he just used Charles.
  • Charles arrived in Australia about 1853. Shipping details have not been found.
  • Charles was a Blacksmith and Miner (both Gold and Stones).
  • He married Grace Harkin (1841-1918), in the Catholic Church in Mudgee, NSW Australia, on
  • 30.11.1867. He was 32 when he married. On the records, it is recorded as Charles Lant and Grace Wasker. Grace was the daughter of John Harkin and Margaret, she was born in Donegal, Ireland and was a General Servant.
  • Charles, it appears, seems to have gone Bankrupt twice. Once on 6.8.1883 - and again on 2.12.1885.
  • He is listed as a Miner in 1883 - and a Labourer in 1885.
  • Charles was 44 when his Father died.
  • Charles had lived in Germany, Mudgee, Gulgong & Two Mile Flat.
  • Charles died on 14.6.1911, in Gulgong, NSW Australia.

GRACE HARKIN arrived in "MONTMORENCY" - Departed 1864 (date not readable) - Arrived 29.11.1864 Sydney - Single and travelled alone after her parents' deaths - her sister Mary and her brother Patrick and his family were already here on 29 Nov 1864. She was buried on 22 Sep 1918 in Portland Cemetery - R/C Section.

  • Grace was born in 1840/41 in Donegal, Ireland, to parents John Harkin and Margaret "Unknown".
  • John and Margaret were deceased before November 1864 when Grace came to Australia. Grace travelled alone and was listed as 27 years old. She was a General Servant.
  • Grace arrived here on the Ship - Monmorency. It left Liverpool on the 28.8.1864 and arrived in Australia on the 29.11.1864.
  • On the Shipping Records Grace is listed as 27 years old, Servant from the County of Donegal. Native Place - Donegal. Her religion was Roman Catholic and it was listed that she could READ only.
  • Grace was here for 3 years before she married Charles on 30.11.1867.
  • Charles and Grace had 8 children altogether, some dying quite young.
