1938 - ROAD DEVIATION - Cross-Country Line - PETITION RESULT
SOME little time ago Mr. A. H. Fortescue, of 'Tarawong,' Mebul, arranged for a petition to be presented through Mr. W. F. Dunn, M.L.A.. to the Minister for Transport (Mr. Bruxner) regarding a road deviation in the vicinity of Beryl, necessitated by the construction of the Sandy Hollow Gulgong-Maryvale railway. The minister has now replied to Mr. Dunn as follows: —
'Following upon your representations, I again took the matter up specially with the Commissioner for Railways and he informs me that the whole of the circumstances have been very carefully reviewed.'With regard to Mr. Fortescue's suggestion that the road in question should have been taken over 'Blue Biddy,' the commissioner pointed out that this is a very steep and broken mountain, and a road deviation would have involved extensive contouring and sharp bends. Moreover, the length of the road and the cost of the work would have been very considerably increased.'In all the circumstances, there fore, the commissioner is of the opinion that nothing has been adduced which would justify a departure from the decision previously reached, which was only arrived at after considerable investigation and the making of several trial surveys.'I might mention that the commissioner informs me that the present road deviation meets with the satisfaction of the president of the local shire council.'
