John Thomas Lund Honeysett was born "in Goodiman" in 1895.

--------------------------------------------------------
1897 - A Mudgee Hawk
Mr. John Honeysett; of Tallewang, writes to the Mudgee Western Post:— "I saw in your paper last week where a large hawk had been shot. I am now sending you the dimensions of one shot at Tallewang recently. It measures 8ft. 4in. from tip to tip of the wings; from point of beak to tail, 3ft. 8in.; from tip of beak to back of head, 7in.; when standing it measures 18in. to the top of its back; its claws will clasp anything 6in. in diameter, and its eyes are as large as good-sized agate marbles. It is what is commonly called the black eaglehawk. It was shot by William Honeysett, and may be seen by anyone at Tallewang."

1933 - [MARRIAGE]

At St. Luke's Church of England Gulgong, the marriage was solemnised of Bertha Kathleen Mary Honeysett, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Honeysett, of ''Rozella,'' Tallawang, and Clifford Nelson Schofield, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Schofield, of Tempe, Sydney.

The home known as "Rozelle", Tallawang

1936 - WEDDING
Honeysett — Shearman
St. Mark's Church of England, Goolma, on Saturday, 26th September, the marriage was celebrated of Miss Nell Shearman, daughter of Mr. R. J. Shearman and the late Mrs. Shearman of "Nellen View," Goolma, and Mr. Richard Honeysett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herb. Honeysett, of Tallawang. Rev. L. V. Caldwell officiated.
As the bride entered the church on the arm of Mr. W. J. Scifleet, of "Kia Ora," Binnaway, (brother-in-law), the congregation sang, "The Voice That Breathed O'er Eden." Mrs. W. V. Shearman presided at the organ. The bride wore an ankle length frock of white tree-bark crepe, trimmed with pin tucks and lace panels and sleeves. The dress clip and buckle, also the bride-groom's buttonhole spray, were sent by a cousin from England. She carried a very handsome bouquet of lilies, and wore a very beautiful embroided tulle veil (lent by Mrs. Stanley Berry, of Sydney). The veil was held in place by a three-row coronet of orange blossoms.

Mrs. Bob Yeo, of Merrygoen (cousin of bride), was matron of honor. She wore an ankle length frock of powder blue georgette with frilled godets, with picture hat to match, and carried a bouquet of blue lupins, tinted lilies, may and tulle. Miss Hazel Skinner, of Goolma (niece of bride), attended as bridesmaid dressed in an ankle length frock of dusty pink georgette with frilled godets. She wore a picture hat to match, and carried a bouquet of pink lupins, tinted lilies, may and tulle. Mr. Roy Stewart, of Goolma (cousin of bride), was best man, and Mr. Les Honeysett (brother of bridegroom) attended as groomsman. Little Valma Scifleet, of Binnaway, and Valerie Deveigne, of Goolma (nieces of bride), were trainbearers. They were attired in ankle-length frocks of colored frilled net, the former wearing pink and the latter blue. They each wore halos of pleated net and coronets of tiny flowers, and carried tiny gold baskets filled with pink and blue lupins, may and tulle. The church was tastefully decorated with stocks, Iceland poppies and sweet peas.

The reception was held at the Goolma Hall. The catering was in the capable hands of Mrs. Boyd, of Gulgong. The bridal table was adorned with a handsome three-tier wedding cake made by Mr. Sweeney, of Gulgong. The bridegroom's present to the bride was a handsome handbag, while the bride's gift to the bridegroom was a set of initialled gold sleeve links. The bridesmaids received a chrome boudoir clock and the matron of honor a crystal necklet, while the tiny train-bearers each received a brush, comb and mirror set.

The bridal party was driven by Mrs. C. R. Niven of Spring Ridge. The happy couple left by car for Sydney, where the honeymoon was spent. The bride travelled in a Wedgewood blue lemere frock, and hand embossed satin backed metalasse coat, hat and shoes to match. Their future home will be at Goolma.

It is with the deepest regret that we note the passing of Mrs W. Honeysett, at Gulgong hospital, aged 59 years. The late Mrs Honeysett was one of the district's most respected residents, and, although suffering illness herself, was always ready to help others who were in need of assistance in her quiet, Christian manner. To her husband and family is extended our most sincere sympathy.

Martins of Cobbora, 5 generations

_______________________________

Martin Families in the Gulgong District

Even today, Martin is a common name in the Gulgong area so it can be quite tricky unravelling the historical information for the family or families with this name. And as if that isn't enough, "Hillside" is a property name in just about every district including Mudgee, Gulgong, Goolma, Gollan, Cobbora, Coonabarabran and everywhere in between.

I recently encountered information relating to Martins' living at "Hillside". There is one Trove reference to "Hillside" Goodiman:
1912 - DEATH AT GULGONG
At an early hour on Thursday morning there died at Nurse Jonas' private hospital. Christine Martin, relict of the late Alexander Martin, of  'Hillside,' Goodiman...
There are various references to "Hillside" at Cobbora or Cobbora Road.
  • Many of these relate to a Mr W Brown; but
  • Later on there's a mention of a Mr. T. L. Martin, of "Hillside," Cobbora (father of Harold Martin of Gulgong)
So it seems "Hillside" is the correct address for two Martin families.

I briefly considered whether it could be the SAME place because:
  • "Goodiman" might refer to the Parish in general rather than the area of the property Goodiman owned by my relatives; and
  • The property Goodiman owned by my relatives was on the Cobbora Road; and
  • The property adjacent to them belonged to a "Robert Martin"; and
  • Mr Brown of "Hillside" Cobbora was said to have a fabulous orchard! and Barbara Gurney's research mentioned that "The [Martin] farm at Goodiman had a lovely fruit orchard".
BUT:
  • Mr Brown was at Hillside Cobbora between at least 1915 and 1918.
  • Alexander Martin's move to Hillside Goodiman was in the mid-1870s and his wife and children (William, Samuel, Florence and Jessie) were mentioned as "from Goodiman" in the years between 1903 and 1919.
So, unless the Browns and Martins all lived on the same property it is likely that two Martin families lived in two properties called "Hillside", both with orchards and both connected to the Cobbora Road!

* James Lawrence Martin, born 1883, died in 1902, at the age of 19. The cause was listed as "ASTHMA BRONCHITIS" which he had suffered for 15 years. Eugene O'Connell, from the neighbouring property of Goodiman, and Benjamin Campbell were listed as witnesses.
