1918 - A Beryl Soldier. PAYS THE FULL PRICE
Word has come to hand to the effect that Private R[eginald]. Peck, of Beryl, had died at the front as a result of pneumonia. The young soldier was well known in the Gulgong district. His parents also reside at Beryl, and to them we extend our deepest sympathy.

Walter, Archie and Frederick Watt

Three Watt brothers were attached to different battalions. Walter and Frederick were killed in action and Archie died from pneumonia in 1915 during the the evacuation from Gallipoli.
Walter is buried at Gallipoli, Archie at Lemnos and Fred was killed on the Somme with no known grave. The three Watt boys have commemorative plaques in the Methodist portion of the Gulgong cemetery.

V R PRIESTLEY of Tasmania,  held a clearing sale at "Gil Gal" Birriwa prior to enlisting. He had a brother, Henry James Vivian Priestley, Private, "B" company, 6th Platoon; 11th Battalion, 1st. AIF Turkey killed at the Landing, Gallipoli April 25, 1915.

Studio portrait of brothers 2199A Private Francis Stanislaus (Frank) Ryan (left), 1st Battalion, and 2672 Driver Ambrose Bernard Ryan, 3rd Battalion. Prior to enlistment both were storekeepers of Goolma, NSW. 
  • Bomber Francis Ryan embarked with the 7th Light Trench Mortar Battery on HMAT Shropshire from Melbourne on 11 May 1917. On 23 August 1918, having transferred to the 1st Battalion and promoted to lance corporal, he was killed in action near Harbonnieres, France, aged 30. 
  • Pte Ambrose Ryan embarked with the 8th Reinforcements of the 3rd Battalion on HMAT Runic from Sydney on 9 August 1915. He returned to Australia on 28 March 1919.

Percy Edgar and Alfred Earnest VILE, sons of George Vile and Mary (nee Milne) who enlisted in Narromine. Percy died on 29 April 1915 age 23 and Alfred on 19 May 1915 age 25. Both buried in war cemeteries near ANZAC Cove and listed on the Narromine war memorial.

Private Henry Harvey Mctegg

Private Henry Harvey Mctegg grew up in Gulgong. He enlisted in the Citizen Military Forces on January 15th 1942 then was transferred to the 2nd Australian Imperial Force on the 24th August 1942 he was posted to the 2/2 Infantry Battalion and embarked at Cairns on December 1944, arriving at Aitape on the North Coast of New Guinea on 31st December 1944.
In fierce fighting Dagura Private Henry Mctegg was awarded the 1939-1945 Pacific Star, the war medal 1939-45 and the Australian Service Star Medal 1939-45.
