1872 - Fatal Mining Accident
Coroner T.A. Browne P.M., held an inquiry at Lowe’s paddock upon the body of Bryan Tonkin Richards, who met his death the previous day by a quantity of falling earth while working in a drive No. 6 South Block, Lowe’s paddock.
Robert Wilson stated he was working with the deceased, the drive was 20 to 30 feet from the bottom of the shaft; deceased was filling a truck, a quantity of earth fell on him, he was about 4 feet from the deceased, he was so confused that he did not know what became of the deceased, until he saw Daniel
McKay and William Irwin getting the deceased from under the earth.
Irwin and McKay, Walter Donnolly [manager of the claim], gave evidence, as did John Lloyd who stated he knew Richards for about 18 months and he was born in Cornwall, England and about 26 years old.
Dr. Ramsay was called and he stated the deceased had died from a fracture of the skull. Verdict accidental death.

1874 - Death of an Old hand upon the Goldfields
An old man [aged 67] well know upon nearly every goldfield in the different colonies, as a cook, under the sobriquet of ‘Old Denny the Cook,’ died, after a brief illness in the Gulgong hospital this week. He was a man of powerful frame and iron constitution and has been in the country a great many years. At one time, about 12 years ago, he had the Albion tables at Forbes, during the height of the Lachlan goldfields and did a large business. His name was Denis Sullivan and when not under the influence of drink, was noted for his affability and close attention to his duties. His remains were buried in the Roman Catholic portion of the Cemetery on Tuesday. We believe he had a daughter residing at or near Melbourne, Victoria.

An old man well in nearly every part of the colony as ‘Old Jimmy, the Dealer’ otherwise James Whitby, died very suddenly this morning at his residence in Herbert Street. He attended the races yesterday, was in his usual health and active and returned home and went to bed as usual. His wife heard him, breathing near daylight and was conversing with him several times during the night. She afterwards slept, and when she awoke found him dead by her side in the bed. Last Sunday he had a slight cold but it did not prevent him from attending the races on Tuesday and Wednesday. He was for a long time upon the Lambing Flat Goldfield and for many years has attended the race meetings throughout the colony. He was a native of Yorkshire and has been in the colony a great many years. He was aged 60. We understand that an inquest will be held this evening.
Source: GULGONG EVENING ARGUS - May 14 1875Coroner’s Inquest was held into the death of James Whitby who died suddenly.
Charles Bird, senior, deposed: I am a dispensing chemist at Gulgong, I saw the deceased about two days ago, he came into my shop, said he was poorly, had a bad cough and a pain in his chest, said he had some Canagheen moss that he procured from Mr. Bird, Junior, he declined any other medicine.
Wilson Ramsay, legal qualified medical practitioner: After examining the body, death was caused by sanguineous apoplexy, death would have been instantaneous. Natural causes.
Source: GULGONG EVENING ARGUS - May 16 1875On Sunday last there was buried in the Gulgong cemetery a well-known and respected miner, John Bate Rowley, aged 57.
Deceased, who had occupied an important and lucrative position in the London post office many years ago, becoming infected with the gold fever, resigned and came to Australia. One of his brothers was a member of the House of Commons. He visited most of the gold fields in New South Wines, and about 16 years ago came to the Canadian, where he remained until a week before his death. He had been ailing for some time, so his friends brought him to the Gulgong Hospital, where everything that medical skill, attention and kindness could accomplish was done to soothe his dying hours. The immediate cause of death was paralysis.
The funeral was very largely attended by all classes, the Orange body (of which deceased was a member) walking before the hearse. The Rev. J. S. Dobson read the funeral service, and afterwards gave an address, in which he warmly eulogised the character of the deceased, describing him as a gentle, kind Christian, whose whole life was a pattern and example to everyone.
